Long Hair. How Long Is Too Long? And Ways To Keep It Healthy.

For centuries women have loved having long hair. For some of those women, the longer, the better. I have always loved long hair. Oh how I adore Jennifer Aniston and her amazing locks (keeping in mind she is a millionaire and can afford the best hair products). I have been working the last year at keeping my hair in great shape. It has been difficult to go and get a trim. And actually, just this last weekend, I had about 1-2 inches taken off, very difficult but my hair looks and feels soooo much better!

One thing my hairstylist explained to me is: When you have split ends, your hair grows out because of the split. Giving your hair a heavy look at the bottom. It is growing (you can tell because of your roots coming in), but you want your hair to grow down, not out. So trimming every 6-8 weeks and getting a nice hair cut (more than a trim) every 3-4 months is actually a great thing for your tresses.

Take this guy for instance. Does anyone REALLY find him attractive? Any guy with hair fuller and longer than mine needs to be in a Disney movie. NEXT!!

You know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words? This picture has me speechless.

I have been reading article after article of things to help your hair not break and to grow in healthy. There are only so many things we can do to make our hair grow faster. It really depends on the person. When I was younger my hair would grow quickly. But now that I'm older it has slowed down a little. It is great to eat foods with lots of protein. Fish has lots of Omega-3 which is not only good for your hair but skin too! Eating vegetables and poultry are wonderful too. I have been taking a vitamin called Biotin. I was taking only about 1 mg but in my research I learned we can take up to 5 mg (5000 mcg) daily. Biotin helps with hair grow and gives the nutrients needed for healthy, strong hair.
But don't take too much that your hair ends up looking like this.... I bet these women didn't need a blanket at night... Their hair kept them warm.

One thing to remember in aiming for a certain look for hair, we all have different types of hair. I would love hair like Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson and even Lauren Conrad. But I don't have much of a curl to my hair, in fact my hair is straight without even needing a flat iron. Take care of your hair. Here are a few Do's and Don'ts I learned to take care of your hair styling wise.
- When your hair is tangled, Do start at the bottom and work your way to the roots.
- Don't over process your hair with color. Find a color you like and work it. Avoid going to drastic color changes just to keep up with the hair color trends.
- Do invest in a comb instead of a brush. It helps to prevent breakage.
- Don't use horse shampoo unless you have really thick hair like a horse, otherwise you will destroy your hair.
- Do a deep conditioner at least once or twice a month.
- Don't forget to trim!
- Do use products that relate to your hair structure that will help it instead of break it.
- Don't tease/rat your hair. It breaks your hair causing your hair to look flat and frizzy.
- Do use heat protecting product if you use a heat styling object like flat irons or curling irons.
- Don't cut your own bangs.
- Do let your hair air dry occasionally. If you aren't going anywhere that you have to look perfect, give your hair a break and let it air out!
Here is the style I'm aiming for. Simple and Chic. And I'm lucky I already have fine, straight hair. Now I just need some length.

I love long hair and am currently sporting it myself. My problem is that after awhile it starts to look shapeless and well, like I've given up. This summer I'm planning to cut it up to my collar bone. I like to rejuvenate my look when the seasons change. :-)

I'm growing my hair out too! Thanks for the tips, I've been wanting to do it the "right" way so that it wasn't full of split ends. I'm going for a reese witherspoon look with her bangs.
